A Short Walking Tour of Invasive Plants in the Vale of Avoca

Date: Sunday, November 23, 10:30am to 12:00pm

Meeting Point: Roxborough Parkette (30 Roxborough Drive), near traffic light at intersection of Mt. Pleasant Road and Roxborough Drive

What to Expect

Join us for a guided walk into the Vale of Avoca ravine to learn about the invasive plant species that are quietly transforming our local ecosystem. This event — co-sponsored by the North Rosedale Residents’ Association (NRRA) and the Midtown Ravines Group — will be co-led by volunteer Toronto Nature Stewards John Oyston, Geoffrey Chan, and Tom Connell.

Together, we’ll aim to identify some of the ravine’s most common invasive plant varieties, including common buckthorn, Japanese knotweed, and phragmites, and discuss how these species affect our green spaces. The walk will also touch on the factors shaping the Avoca ravine and offer a glimpse into restoration efforts under discussion for the Vale of Avoca.

Participants will gather at Roxborough Parkette before proceeding north into the Vale of Avoca ravine as far as the Yellow Creek footbridge. The group will then return to Mt. Pleasant Road for an overview of the Roxborough Parkette Stewardship project. (An option may be available for those wishing to exit towards St. Clair for TTC access and washrooms.)
